Course summary

Human Nutrition is one of the most exciting, diverse and practically pressing of the human sciences. This degree equips you with a thorough understanding of the scientific basis of nutrition in physiology, biochemistry, genetics and immunology, providing the theoretical, empirical and practical knowledge to investigate the links between diet and a vast range of medical conditions, health and social problems. In the second and final years you will learn how to apply your knowledge to a wide variety of pressing issues and problems, concerning the health of individuals, social groups and populations. You will learn about nutritional therapies for diseases and disorders, processes of food production and delivery, globally and nationally, the regulation of the food chain from pre-harvest to consumer, the scientific and ethical basis of food standards with reference to hygiene, storage, preparation and labelling, and the growing challenges of sustainability, public health and environmental crises. This course includes a foundation year. This course will help you to pursue careers in a wide range of areas in healthcare, working in the NHS, as a private therapist, in health education and public health. You can also consider careers in teaching, academia, research and the food industry. NGOs including charities are increasingly looking for people with an understanding of the problems of food sustainability and safety, so the degree is also useful if you want to work in an area such as international aid and development.
