Course summary

This specially designed course enables you to make an informed choice about which visual arts subject you wish to study at degree level, giving successful students the opportunity for guaranteed progression onto a named BA programme at Middlesex University.

The Foundation Year in Visual Arts is a creative and inspiring multidisciplinary course encouraging students to explore different aspects of art and design. It builds confidence, helps students identify their strengths and develops skills and techniques. The course offers an experimental diagnostic approach exploring different creative pathways and clarifies an industry specialism to help students choose possible career paths in the creative industries.

Following a multidisciplinary induction, you will explore the core visual arts subject areas in the first part of the programme, then choose to specialise to work towards your final portfolio of creative work and exhibition. Alongside this you will explore London as a creative centre of visual arts through, gallery, studio and event visits, and reflect on your experiences.

A key feature of the curriculum is that students benefit from regular formative feedback and assessment. This process is designed to allow you the freedom to experiment, explore and investigate new, different and challenging ways of working.

Overview

Our course is independent and studio-based, specifically focused on developing your skills as a professional illustrator and finding your style. The course has a strong focus on drawing, from the communicative and expressive sides. You’ll work on this in classes based on life and observational drawing each week throughout the three-year degree.

Course content

On BA illustration you will be taught specific creative skills and processes such as, printmaking, animation, bookbinding, relevant digital programmes and drawing both life and location. The course concentrates on contemporary applications and traditional illustration processes and the success of our graduates in both international competitions and employment in the creative industries is testament to this approach.

Assessment

Assessment is entirely through coursework. As well as your practical work, which you will display at the end-of-term exhibitions, and your portfolio, you will be assessed through written work and presentations. We will be looking at the standard of your practical work, but also the depth of your research, your analytical abilities and your time management, among other things. Some assessed work will be done in groups. You will give feedback on each other's work, and you will also be asked to evaluate your own work.

Careers

On our BA Illustration course there is an emphasis on identifying specialist skills, and equipping students with the knowledge to enable them to set up studios, approach agents or produce websites in order to embark on their future careers. There are specific lectures and visiting illustrators, agents and publishers to inform students of the issues involved. Our students gain work in writing and illustrating children's books, magazine publishing, editorial illustration, advertising and design.
