Information Studies and History (VP11) is a joint honours degree that covers two valuable and complementary disciplines. Humanity’s curiosity about the past and the way human societies have evolved over time can be documented through the ages by historical documentation – from manuscripts to letters, pictures to newspaper articles. On this degree, you will be immersed into this world and equipped with the analytical, interpretive, archival, communication and research skills to help other people pursue their historical interests and find the information they need.**Why study Information Studies and History at Aberystwyth?**Department of Information Services: As part of this degree, you will be given a broad introduction into Information Studies, taught by experts in their field. The department has a well-established international reputation in teaching and research in information studies; studying in a town with a rich information history and range of cultural organisations with which the Department has close links including: the National Library of Wales (one of the UK’s five ‘copyright’ libraries), the Royal Commission for Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, the Welsh Books Council, Ceredigion Archives and Ceredigion Museum.Department of History and Welsh History: History has been taught in Aberystwyth since 1872, making our department the most established in Wales and one of the foremost in the UK. Our teaching is innovative, research-based and designed to train you in historical skills of interpretation, analysis and communication that are transferable for the workplace. Subject specialisms enable you to follow your historical interests from the early medieval period to the present day, ranging across four continents, and embracing political, social, economic and cultural history.As an Information Studies and History student you will have full use of the National Library of Wales, one of the five copyright libraries of the UK and Wales’s leading archive repository.On completion of the degree you will be able to:- understand how information is organised and used and the role it plays in society- evaluate if historical information is reliable or ‘real’- understand how to deal with the massive amounts of information that are generated in the digital world.You will be in a good position to go into a range of careers or further study, especially onto professionally accredited Master’s qualifications in Information and Library Studies, Archive and Records Management or Digital Curation.
