Course summary

Adventure tourism is one of one of the fastest growing markets both in the UK and abroad. This programme of study has been designed to provide you with current research informed thinking balanced against a programme of field work and practical activities to prepare you for the workplace. Residentials and fieldwork During your first year you will have the opportunity to take part in a residential experience. This will be a chance to meet new friends and take part in a number of challenges to develop your problem solving and team working skills. Activities could include rock climbing, gorge scrambling, mountaineering, walking, canoeing and kayaking. Building on your first year, you will gain additional experience through a residential trip and fieldwork in both your second and third years. You will also have access to our student societies that are regularly engaged in a variety of adventure tourism activities. These experiences are designed to allow you to build skills and knowledge in preparing you for a career in adventure tourism, and to have fun. Your knowledge and understanding of the unique locations, host communities and sustainable practices required in this sector will enable you to become a confident, ethically minded and critically informed adventure tourism professional with the expertise to excel in this industry. This course will maximise your exposure to practising industry professionals through opportunities such as field trips, your placement year and extra-curricular learning opportunities such as engagement with relevant external qualifications and short courses. Your development will be further supported by a range of industry-based assessments.Key industry partners such as the Adventure Tourism Research Association (ATRA), Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), The Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT) and the Tourism Management Institute (TMI) will provide further opportunities to engage with employers through a variety of events, often hosted at the University.
