Course summary
Overview
This specialist Master’s programme examines in depth critical issues in international business economics, together with the complexities of, and challenges facing, today’s world markets.
Take our virtual tour
We focus on practical economic analysis, policy formulation and market efficiency in a real-world context, designed to bring you up-to-speed with challenges facing modern businesses through guest speakers (subject to availability), industry visits, case studies and internship opportunities. Emphasis is given to developing quantitative skills to evaluate outcomes of economic policies and interventions, making evidence-based decisions.
Our experienced teaching staff aim to share their professional or research expertise, with current staff members having worked as economists for large companies, run national training courses or published in leading journals, including the International Journal of Economics and Business Research. You can also benefit from industry-standard facilities, including our Trading Floor, which is equipped with 42 dual-screen Bloomberg terminals. Please note that this is subject to availability and staff are subject to change.
Course information
The primary purpose of this course is to try and equip you with the practical experience, skills and knowledge to apply advanced economics principles and mathematics to support decision making – at a global, national or individual firm level.
Upon successful completion, this ability to practice effective decision making should support you as you progress into your chosen future career, either as an economist or in related roles and sectors.
We adopt a holistic approach, exploring the synergies between economic theory, management practice, international business and finance.
Throughout your studies, you will have the opportunity to encounter real-life scenarios. You will also have the opportunity to learn how to use managerial economics tools to solve actual economic problems – from determining optimal pricing strategies to evaluating mergers and take-overs, among others.
Course content is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect new developments in economics, the world economy and the needs of private and public sectors. For example, we have recently examined the topic of why corporate CEO pay is so high.
Career prospects
Upon successful completion, you should be well informed to face the challenges of managers working in international financial and business markets in the 21st century.
You could work as an economist, analyst or consultant for non-governmental organisations (NGOs), such as the World Bank or International Monetary Fund (IMF), or private companies and public sector organisations. Typical roles include becoming a financial analyst, bond trader, policy analyst, bank examiner, research analyst, actuary or market research consultant.
The nature of specialist knowledge, technical, analytical and transferrable skills you will have the opportunity to develop during the programme, and the opportunity to align your final semester project to match specific career aspirations aims to produce highly employable experts in economic analysis with working understanding of concepts applicable to various institutions and fields, upon successful completion.
