Course summary

One of Europe’s most creative and distinctive civilisations, Italy has a fascinating and influential history. We will teach you the Italian language in the context of Italian culture, past and present, including leading works of literature and cinema. You do not need to have studied Italian previously to take our programme. Intensive language tuition, and a year spent studying or working in Italy, will teach you how to read, write and speak the language to a high standard, including in translation. Studying English Literature will further develop your critical, analytic, linguistic and creative skills. Engaging with a broad range of texts and a variety of approaches to reading, you will acquire an understanding of the cultural contexts of writing in English from the late middle-ages to the present. By enhancing your unique literary faculties, our programme prepares you to contribute to a society in which an understanding of texts of all kinds is crucially important. From the University’s own Italian Society to the Italian Cultural Institute, you will find many places in Edinburgh to indulge your interest in one of the world’s great cultures. Edinburgh is also the first UNESCO World City of Literature, a fantastic literary city which many greats of English literature have called home.
