Course summary
You will gain the skills you need to work in Japan or an international professional context. It's a 4-year degree that includes a year studying in Japan. You will learn communicative Japanese skills and gain a deep understanding of Japanese culture. You will gain insight into different language structures and sociocultural practices as well as learning to communicate interculturally.This course is suitable if you are a beginner, or have prior knowledge of Japanese. We will place you at an appropriate level. By the end of the course, you will have gained the ability to have conversations and discussions in Japanese. You will be able to give presentations and write coherently. Learn to use Japanese for academic, social, and professional purposes, reaching upper B2/C1 level on the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR).Immerse yourself in Japanese culture with a year of studying abroad in Japan. While studying abroad, you will take Japanese language classes at your host university. You will also take courses, either taught in English or in Japan, that are relevant to your degree.Our approach to teaching Intercultural Communication will give you both theoretical expertise and experience in communicating with people from different cultures. You will explore how language relates to speakers' intentions and purposes in social interaction and examine how language choices can express identities and cultural values.The Linguistics part of the course gives you a working knowledge of linguistics, how we use language, and how it's structured. You will explore how we articulate speech and look at how English differs around the world. You will also examine how language is processed in the mind.
