Course summary

Our BA Japanese Studies course will give you a firm grounding in the Japanese language while you study Japan in its historical, cultural social and global contexts. You will benefit from research-led teaching in areas such as Japanese visual culture, popular and youth culture, religion, intellectual and social history, society and education. You will develop various linguistic skills, including speaking and writing accurately, and understanding and analysing audio, video and written materials in different registers. You will also learn how to speak to a group with confidence and translate with appropriate sensitivity. Year 1 will see you study core course units, but you will be able to choose specific unit to focus on areas of interest in the study of Japan and East Asia from Year 2. In addition, Flexible Honours may allow you to study an additional arts, languages or cultures subject.The course unit details listed below are those you may choose to study as part of this programme and are referred to as optional units. These are subject to change and are the latest example of the curriculum available on this programme. Although language units may show here as optional, they are a mandatory part of your modern languages degree and you will take the units relevant to your level of language in each year of study. It is compulsory to study language at all levels of your modern languages degree.

Grades ABBThis programme is designed for students whose level of Japanese at entry ranges from complete beginner to approximately A-level standard. It is not suitable for students whose first language is Japanese.Whilst we do not insist on any particular pre-requisite subject at A-level, we are seeking strong performance in learning - and particularly in essay writing subjects. The course is very demanding in terms of academic writing as well as language learning and we therefore prefer that at least 60% of one A-level
