Course summary

This course examines language-culture relationships in a globalized world, combining linguistics with cultural anthropology to analyze both digital and traditional communication. You'll study diverse human interactions and everyday language practices within cultural contexts, splitting time between linguistic and cultural studies modules. Key opportunities include: studying 1-2 languages from beginner level (optional continuation after year 1) enhancing employability through professional projects abroad or work placements developing intercultural competence and research methods for language/communication analysis and learning quantitative linguistic analysis or interdisciplinary subjects. An optional year abroad/employment extends the degree to 4 years, deepening cultural understanding. Language options include English (for international students), French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish to graduate level, plus Chinese (Stage 3), Arabic, Italian, Japanese, and Russian (Stage 2). Led by language specialist Fátima Cande, this program regularly reviews content (regulated by England's Office for Students) to maintain quality while meeting educational expectations.
