Course summary

Law and German Law at Aberdeen gives you all the benefits of our trademark breadth, depth, choice and quality at Aberdeen Law School – ranked 5th for student satisfaction (NSS 2022). You will have the added advantage of studying the German legal system and spending a year of this 5-year course abroad.Law at Aberdeen looks at the historical, social, political and economic forces that influence our legal systems and govern our societies. You will learn to think like a lawyer rather than just 'learn' law. A major factor in our quality is the calibre and enthusiasm of our staff, testing your mental agility with complex, realistic legal scenarios as you get to grips with criminal, public and private law, legal systems, contracts, human rights and explore family law, the law of property and legal aspects of the EU. You will also have lots of opportunity to hone your developing legal skills in student-led initiatives such as mock legal debating, our highly active Law Society, the students’ journal in which your work may be published and our community law clinic – the Aberdeen Law Project. As with all our combined programmes, you will gain a thorough grounding in Scots Law to gain the LLB. To this you will add courses in German language throughout your studies and spend the whole of your third year studying through the Erasmus Exchange Programme at either Marburg, Freiburg or Regensburg universities in Germany. Should you choose to practise law, you will have a wide variety of career options within the law itself. However, more than a third of Aberdeen law graduates now choose to use their law degree as a passport for entry into a wide range of careers including business - for which you will be a great candidate - media, finance and banking, teaching, government service and the police force.
