Course summary
Why Law and Practice? Our market-leading Law and Practice degree focuses on developing your real-world skills and provide all the learning for a Qualifying Law Degree as well as developing your advocacy, legal drafting and legal practice skills, building a solid foundation for you to become a competent and knowledgeable practitioner of law. This degree provides an intensive pathway in your third year with all modules designed to allow you to work towards taking the new Solicitor’s Qualifying Exams (SQE1) following your completion of your Law degree. Taking a Huddersfield Law School degree means you can choose to take an LLB in Law, LLB in Law and Practice or an MLaw (incorporating LLB) as an integrated Masters in Law and Practice. Whichever pathway you choose, all degree programmes support you in exploring your options and the career path you you wish to take and you can change your route right up to the end of your second year and choose the path that is best for you, for your final year. As well as gaining an understanding of the law itself, studying a law degree will teach you a wide range of essential skills such as how to construct an argument, how to communicate with clients, the importance of attention to detail, and the ability to work in a team as well as on your own initiative. We’ll help you to build your employability skills while you study, making you stand out to potential employers. On the LLB Law and Practice course we also give you the opportunity to take a placement year that could see you working in a business and gaining real world experience. How will you learn? You will learn through practical application and delivered lectures and group work sessions. - You’ll gain a firm understanding of legal principles and core legal concepts. - You’ll be able to start focusing on the topics that interest you in your second year and will spend the whole of your third year, studying legal practice skills-based modules. Our strong alumni networks provide wide opportunities to engage with local legal practitioners working in regionally and internationally renowned firms. - Our Law School Professional Mentoring scheme is a particular success which enables our students to bridge the gap between education and working in the legal sector. - You may decide to take up the opportunity to be part of our Legal Advice Clinic, where you will work closely with practising solicitors and help them with real cases.* *Available from Year 2 and subject to successfully completing a competency assessment. Legal Advice Clinic The Legal Advice Clinic was set up by students in 2013 in response to the legal aid cuts which left the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in society without access to legal representation. The university invested in a clinic which is innovatively placed off campus in a shop in the town centre. IMPORTANT NOTICE If you are thinking of becoming a solicitor please be aware that from September 2021 the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has announced it will be introducing a set of national assessments called the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) for anyone who wants to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales. If you have already started your law degree, you will be able to finish and qualify in the same way as before by taking the MLP or an external LPC. Or, you may choose to take the new SQE. The SRA is providing information and guidance about how to qualify on the new system so keep checking the website. Please find more details on the SRA's website here - https://www.sra.org.uk/students/sqe/
