Course summary
The Law LLB (Hons) degree provides essential legal knowledge and skills, as well as the opportunity to focus on areas of interest and to think critically about law’s role in society.
As a key social institution, law influences how we act and think, and is influenced in turn by changes in society, technology and the environment. Understanding the dynamic nature of law will equip students for a future career in a rapidly transforming world. Understanding the relationships between law, power and justice will enable them to pursue careers reflectively and create better futures.
Students will join a vibrant, supportive community on the Loughborough campus, with social justice at its heart. They will be taught by internationally recognised experts at the forefront of legal research and education. As part of the degree, they will be able to put their knowledge into practice, build their experience and confidence and gain insights into potential graduate work through a year-long external placement and/or pro bono work experience with relevant organisations.
Graduates will be well prepared for diverse career destinations, including legal practice the public sector policy and administration journalism and communications business and finance national, international and transnational third sector organisations entrepreneurship research and higher education.
Placement year
A professional placement allows you to test drive a career and stand out to employers. Placement options are wide and varied but would typically be a graduate level role with one of a broad range of companies or organisations based in the UK or overseas.
We have strong industry links which help our students secure year-long placements in the UK and internationally. These placements are an invaluable opportunity to enhance employability and apply skills and knowledge to a working environment. You are expected to secure your own placement, however, extensive support from the School Placement Officer and Careers Network team is always available. Transfer between the three and four year courses is normally possible.
All Law LLB (Hons) degree students will have the opportunity to put their knowledge and skills into practice through pro bono work and placement opportunities.
Your future career
The Law LLB (Hons) degree prepares students for a range of professional leadership roles. Students will develop specific legal skills and competencies, including legal research, legal problem-solving, understanding of primary legal materials and legal terminology, the ability to analyse and synthesise legal information and apply legal knowledge and legal advocacy skills.
They will also develop transferrable skills, competencies and values, including written and oral communication skills, team working, critical thinking, intellectual independence, digital literacy, self-management, judgement and academic and personal integrity.
Networking opportunities will be available with alumni and guest speakers, as well as through the Loughborough Law Student Society.
Qualification as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales involves completion of a degree, plus additional vocational training or work towards the Solicitors Qualifying Examination, and a period of practical work experience. Our LLB meets the specifications of the Bar Standards Board for those wishing to qualify as a barrister and offers a comprehensive foundation for future practise as a solicitor. Students wishing to enter the legal profession will be supported to progress to the next stage in the qualification process. In some cases, work undertaken during a placement year may also contribute to the pre-requisites for solicitors’ practice.
