Course summary

Overview

Our professional practice focused LLB Law course will give you a thorough grounding in the law across all the major disciplines and the opportunity to develop your career and professional skills at the same time.

As well as developing in-depth legal knowledge and academic skills, there is a strong emphasis on experiential learning and legal education for professional practice and the enhancement of professional career prospects. We offer opportunities for all undergraduate students to undertake a work placement, internship or work experience, including in our Legal Advice Clinic, during our core Working in the Law Module. We also offer professional practice and skills options that allow students to develop their professional skills and specialist interests in selected practice areas including Advocacy, Civil Litigation and Human Rights.

The course is the first step on the journey to becoming a Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive as well as being the foundation for a broad range of other professional careers. It is designed to give students a ‘Head Start’ on professional qualification, particularly for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination with its focus on professional procedure and skills as well as the academic study of Law. As part of our assessment strategy, we use professional examination-style multiple-choice questions, so our students have an opportunity to practise and prepare for them in advance.

Assessment

The assessment strategy of the LLB programme requires that assessment should:

  • be based on criteria and practices known to students in advance,
  • be marked according to published standards and practices formulated to ensure fairness and consistency, test the outcomes of the course and each module at the appropriate level,
  • be sufficiently varied in the form to test all outcomes including both knowledge and skills,
  • be searching and rigorous in standard,
  • be robust in designing out plagiarism and personation,
  • contribute to the development of student learning during the course, including through test enhanced learning,
  • offer opportunities during the course to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses and provide feedback,
  • comply with LSBU Regulations and the requirements of the Institute of Legal Executives.
