Course summary
On the BA (Hons) Leading Children's Development and Learning course, you will develop an in-depth knowledge of the education sector and the leadership skills you need to excel in it. York College offers its students a flexible and supportive environment in which to study at degree level. Tutors will work with you in college to ensure that you are able to develop the skills and competencies you need to progress into a leadership role within your setting. This bespoke support ensures that our graduates achieve the highest possible standards in both their academic achievement and professional lives. The programme is designed to allow students who have previously studied for a foundation degree or HND to progress onto a qualification at Honours degree level (level 6). The course adopts an alternative approach to the study of leadership in children’s development and learning by developing existing knowledge, skills and competencies through reflective practice, critical analysis, research and collaboration with sector professionals and peers. It is aimed at individuals working mainly in an early years or primary school-age setting. Studying at this level is a challenging and rewarding experience with an emphasis on the academic and theoretical aspect of the subject. Your course themes will include leading a multi-disciplinary approach, developing inclusive environments, early years’ policy and provisions and critical perspectives in education. The BA (Hons) Leading Children's Development and Learning is awarded on completion of 120 credits gained over eight compulsory modules. There is a requirement for the student to be employed in the children’s workforce or to undertake a work placement to be able to complete some of the module assessments. The programme is normally taught on one afternoon and evening each week, with students preparing their dissertations with tutorial support either on or off site. You will be assessed in several ways including seminar activities and written work. Each module is assessed on an individual basis and may include a variety of the methods listed above. On successful completion of the course you will receive a BA (Hons) degree in Leading Children's Development and Learning. Graduates with the appropriate grades may progress to a PGCE in primary education or lifelong learning, Masters level courses.
