Course summary

Course Overview:

This course was designed to introduce people to the knowledge and skills which underpin the counselling process. The Certificate qualification has a dual purpose. Firstly, it meets the needs of the large number of people who are interested in counselling either for personal or professional development, but who do not envisage their developing a professional career in counselling. Secondly, it provides an introduction to counselling concepts and skills and is useful for individuals who wish to pursue further study in counselling with a view to becoming a professional counsellor.

The course is based on the problem management framework developed by Gerard Egan, which builds on a strong humanistic base and moves towards a more action orientated form of helping as the counsellor-client relationship develops.

Whilst progression is not automatic, this Level 4 certificate will be useful for those with limited helping/caring experience who wish to pursue academic and professional studies in counselling. It is possible that successful students may move from this specialised entry level course, to the Foundation Degree, then onto BSc (Hons) Professional Development in Counselling to the Postgraduate Cert/Diploma/MSc in Counselling & Therapeutic Counselling or PhD study.
