This course explores, in an innovative and comprehensive way, an area that is becoming increasingly important in Wales and beyond. The program benefits from the expertise of various Bangor University schools in the fields of Social Sciences, Linguistics, Law, Business, Welsh Language, and Health Sciences which will provide students with an understanding of the theoretical issues in Language Planning, as well as the crucial qualifying questions. The number of bilingual and multilingual communities and workplaces is increasing, and language planning is an area of increasing importance. As a result, there is an increasing demand for individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to formulate effective strategies and systems that promote linguistic equality. As language considerations become a priority for many areas - development, planning, education, health, IT, marketing - staff in a wide range of fields need to develop language planning understanding and skills.

Career Prospects

The program prepares students to work in a variety of roles - in the public, private and third sectors - including language officers, policy development, management, marketing. The program also prepares students for doctoral level study in the broad field of language planning. In addition, the program is well suited to practitioners and professionals already working in the field of language planning but who wish to apply a theoretical framework and international context to their daily work.
