Course summary
This course is subject to a review which may mean a change to the units of study.**Overview**Proficiency in linguistics can help to give you the competitive edge in the global jobs market. If you are interested in the way in which we communicate and how it can influence people, studying linguistics will help you unravel how language is inextricably linked to who we are.Linguistics is devoted to the scientific study of natural language and concerned with how languages evolve, are structured and what they have in common. It also studies how languages are acquired and used.Our programme enables you to develop a sound knowledge of both theoretical and applied perspectives and places emphasis on English, with examples from other languages where appropriate. The core elements of the course teach you about sentence structure (Syntax), meaning (Semantics and Pragmatics), Forensic Linguistics and Phonetics and Phonology. You will also learn about language use and variation in different social contexts, the media, and intercultural settings.Communicating effectively, critical thinking and developing rigorous analytical skills are valuable assets in the job market and are transferable to various professions.**Minor languages available:** French, Spanish, Modern Standard Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, German, Italian and Japanese. This course has a Foundation Year available.**Features and Benefits**- Option to study a foreign language as part of your programme of study. The majority of our 30+ academic, research and support staff are native speakers of French, German, Italian, Spanish, Modern Standard Arabic, Mandarin Chinese and Japanese. We also have multiple connections with language groups across Manchester to ensure you can converse in your chosen language.- Focus on applied linguistics.- We coach practical skills for work including communication skills, presentation skills, essay and report writing, summary skills, interview and questionnaire techniques.- Our Language Resource Centre is equipped with social learning spaces, PCs and voice recognition software for language training. It is also home to our multimedia and audio language learning laboratories/media booths for group-work with PCs or large flat screen TVs and multiple satellite channels broadcast in foreign languages with recording facilities.- Study alongside Erasmus students from our European partner institutions.- We coach practical skills for work including communication skills, presentation skills, essay and report writing, summary skills, interview and questionnaire techniques, use of ICT and the internet.
