Course summary

Our BA Literature and Creative Writing (including foundation year), will be suitable for you if your academic qualifications do not yet meet our entrance requirements for the three-year version of this course and you want a programme that increases your subject knowledge as well as improves your academic skills in order to support your academic performance. This four-year course includes a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by a further three years of study. During your Year Zero, you study three academic subjects relevant to your chosen course as well as a compulsory academic skills module. We are a community of award-winning novelists, poets and playwrights. Creative Writing at Essex has a great tradition of nurturing writers and thinkers. From past giants such as Robert Lowell, Ted Berrigan and Ben Okri who have shaped literature as we know it, to prize-winning contemporary writers such as Professors Derek Walcott and Marina Warner, Essex has always attracted people who are at the heart of defining and redefining literature. You will pursue your love of reading and explore some of the most important novels, poems, and plays from the United States, the Caribbean and Europe while developing your own writing through a variety of planned readings and writing exercises. We’ll teach you to be your own editor; critically judging your own and others’ work is invaluable in transforming your work from something good to something great.
