Course summary
Programme overview
European Law is under unprecedented levels of challenge and scrutiny, not least as a result of Brexit and the ongoing rule of law disputes with some of the Union’s youngest Member States. It is also in a process of rapid transformation, including the crucial redefinition of the EU-UK relationship, the implementation of very ambitious free trade deals with neighbouring and more distant countries, as well as an expanding role of the EU’s external relations. There are thus foreseeable trends of further Europeanisation and more active coordination of Member States’ policies, in particular their responses to the 2020 pandemic and the economic crisis that is, unfortunately, very likely to hit Europe and the entire world. Understanding EU law in the current context is a fascinating and challenging academic endeavour and this LLM will equip you with advanced knowledge in a number of areas, as well as in the specific topic of your choice for your dissertation.
If you are interested in studying law beyond your undergraduate degree level and want to develop your analytical, research and legal writing skills, you will find Bristol’s LLM to be a challenging and rewarding experience. We have a large and vibrant international community and our LLM students benefit from small class sizes taught by world-renowned experts.
Careers
This programme will provide you with a strong foundation for a broad range of careers that involve a European law perspective. Graduates go on to act as solicitors, barristers, lawyers and researchers in international and European organisations, such as the United Nations or the European Commission. A number work for NGOs and other agencies. Some graduates go on to further study or research at the University of Bristol or other universities.
