Southampton Law School has strong research and teaching profiles in commercial and corporate law, maritime law and international and human rights law, and our LLM Master of Laws builds on this diversity of strengths. This LLM programme is designed to be highly flexible, allowing you to customise your degree to your particular interests and career plans, and mix and match from our wide range of modules.

The LLM Master of Laws programme will give you the specialized knowledge and practical know-how that will enable you to pursue a wide range of legal and non-legal careers. You will be able to tackle contemporary legal problems as well as complex legal issues arising from practical scenarios, to critically evaluate the principles of the areas of law you have chosen to study and their effectiveness. You will also develop your practical transferable skills, including the ability to conduct independent research, to analyse complex texts, construct arguments and communicate these effectively.

On this rigorous but exciting LLM programme you’ll gain the knowledge and professional skills required to advise, litigate and negotiate, based on a sound knowledge of the legal frameworks in areas that interest you. The course is completely flexible, enabling you to study subjects you are passionate about and that reflect your career aspirations. You’ll choose from a broad range of modules, including some that are unique to Southampton Law School. The options reflect our world-leading expertise in areas such as maritime, corporate and commercial, international business, information technology and insurance law. You’ll be taught by world-renowned academics who are at the forefront of cutting-edge research and high-profile law reform and advisory work, and who bring the latest legal developments to your learning. The LLM Master of Laws programme develops your practical legal skills required to advise, litigate and negotiate, within a module structure that allows you to shape your degree towards your particular interests.

The programme draws on the diverse research strengths of the School’s academic staff who are active at the forefront of international and national legal reform and development. The expertise of the staff has been recognised as being of international excellence, and in the School of Law we are strongly committed to providing the very best learning experience for all our students in a friendly, stimulating and research-led environment.

This challenging degree attracts talented students from around the world. Some already have legal training, while others come from industry backgrounds. All are looking to gain specialist expertise that will help them stand out from the competition.

Assessment:

Assessment will vary depending on modules selected, but will include exams and coursework as well as your dissertation. Students are required to complete a total of 180 credits across their modules (credits are based on Credit Accumulation Transfer Scheme - CATS). The core LLM dissertation is awarded 60 credits, and students are free to choose remaining modules that total 120 credits.
