Whether you’re looking to begin your academic career or want to develop your skills and expertise for a career in industry, studying a research degree will be a journey that will stimulate your passion for your subject and push you to reach your potential. Our research degrees can be studied full-time or part-time and we also offer practice-led PhD and a PhD by distance-learning. An MA by Research in the School of Music allows you to take a period of sustained independent research at Masters level. This type of research study works through close one-to-one supervision, tailored specifically to the needs of the project and your research requirements. You'll write a thesis of approximately 30,000 words on a subject of your choice.We are leaders in practice-based research methodologies in composition and performance. The work of our award-winning composers embraces acoustic, electronic and computer composition, and engages with multi-disciplinary approaches to creativity. We work closely with internationally-recognised performers and we engage in collaborative compositional processes. Our researchers explore the integration of research and performance.
