Whether you’re looking to begin your academic career or want to develop your skills and expertise for a career in industry, studying a research degree will be a journey that will stimulate your passion for your subject and push you to reach your potential. Our research degrees can be studied full-time or part-time and we also offer practice-led PhD and a PhD by distance-learning. An MA by Research in the School of Music allows you to take a period of sustained independent research at Masters level. This type of research study works through close one-to-one supervision, tailored specifically to the needs of the project and your research requirements. You'll write a thesis of approximately 30,000 words on a subject of your choice.Our research explores a rich variety of musicology from the seventeenth century to the present day. We pursue a diverse range of methodological approaches, from the critical to the applied, and explore the role of music within historical, theoretical, literary, aesthetic, technological, popular and interdisciplinary contexts. Our collaborative research is international in scope and engages museums, galleries and other cultural organisation and institutions.
