Course summary
Overview
History of Art and Archaeology of East Asia:
The MA History of Art and Archaeology of East Asia and Intensive Language is a two-year programme; it combines the strengths of the MA History of Art and Archaeology of East Asia with intensive language training in Japanese or Korean. Students study the arts of China, Korea and Japan, exploring a wide range of East Asian arts, from Chinese archaeology to Japanese prints, Korean installation works to Buddhist monuments, in historical and contemporary periods. Instruction in the language of their choice is provided by teachers in the Faculty of Languages and Cultures. By the end of the programme, which includes a summer language school abroad, students have received sufficient instruction to reach near-proficiency in the language.
Intensive Language (Chinese):
This module is a core component of the two-year programmes with Intensive Language (Chinese). Classes are taught in Chinese by academic staff at a university in China over a period of six weeks during the summer (July/August). Assessment is conducted at SOAS upon return. The intensive classroom environment and immersion experience of living and studying in China is designed to facilitate the student’s ability to build fluency within the appropriate daily social and cultural contexts.
Employment
Students in the School of Arts develop a ??critical and theoretically informed approach to global arts and culture. In addition to an intercultural awareness and practical expertise, graduates gain a wide portfolio of transferable skills which are especially sought after in the creative and cultural industries.
