All about the course

  • Philosophy: The course is built on a philosophy reflecting the values of students, patients, service users, families, practice colleagues, and university staff. It focuses on nursing ethics, personalised care, and a safety model to ensure the well-being of individuals and their carers. The programme also emphasises professional behaviours, inter-professional collaboration, and the qualities expected of a compassionate nurse, such as emotional intelligence and moral responsibility.
  • Interdisciplinary Learning: You'll engage with staff and clinical partners as co-producers in your learning journey. The programme includes a coaching approach to personal tutoring to enhance your potential and character development as a professional nurse. You will have access to facilities including clinical and immersive simulation suites, formal teaching sessions, and group or one-on-one sessions.

Programme Structure:

  • 50% Practice: Gain hands-on experience in hospital and community settings, working with qualified assessors and supervisors.
  • 50% Theory: Engage in lectures, seminars, and simulated nursing practice sessions.
  • Programme Requirements: To be eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse, you must complete 2,300 hours of theoretical learning and 2,300 hours of practice learning, totalling 4,600 hours.

How you will learn

Teaching methods include:

  • The course is split equally between theory and practice, with regular placements.
  • At level 7, you will typically have around 2.5 days of face-to-face contact per week during theory modules, including lectures, seminars, simulated practice, and personal tutoring.

Independent learning:

  • Expect to spend significant time on independent study, including reading, research, and coursework preparation, supported by excellent facilities like the library, learning zone, and simulation suites.

Assessment methods include:

A mix of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, presentations, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), and exams.

  • Year 1: 50% coursework, 50% practical.
  • Year 2: 50% coursework, 50% practical.

Feedback: Forward-focused feedback will be provided on all assessments to help you improve continuously.

What about after uni?

As a graduate, you will be qualified to work as a staff nurse in your chosen field, whether in acute settings like hospitals or community-based roles. You may pursue a career within the NHS or in various sectors, including health centres, prisons, care homes, or hospices.
