Course summary

The MA in Sports Journalism at the University of Winchester is specifically designed for students who want to enhance and develop their skills in the most current, industry-informed Sport Journalism.

With significant disruption having taken place in how news is distributed, publishers are now exploring new ways to tell stories and make money through content using the latest digital technology. Sports Journalism is at forefront of this innovative approach. This MA will equip students with practical and critical skills to negotiate this terrain.

Modules will train you in the fundamental principles of sports journalism but also prepare you to be at intellectually at ease with working in an industry that encourages constant change, innovation and debate. It will explore the following issues:

  • What is the impact of new technology on sports journalism?
  • How can you understand & make use of new technology?
  • How has the role of the sports journalist developed ?
  • How can you stay ahead of changes in the industry?

Using an ‘agile’ approach, you will learn how to develop and employ intellectual and practical skills to engage with change and work as successful sports journalists. The focus on digital sports journalism and innovation aims to produce skilled, confident graduates who are ready to begin careers in journalism or closely related fields in a wide variety of roles. You will gain a range of skills as per Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC) training ese skills and the critical and theoretical context have been planned to mutually reinforce each other.

The programme will be working closely with the media industry to ensure the provision of a continuously up-to-date curriculum, and an effective network of relations to facilitate an easy transition from our class rooms into professional newsrooms. Staff and students form a simulated work place, like a newsroom, where together and independently, they will seek to generate and exchange knowledge. You will take responsibility for your own learning and are encouraged to make use of the wide range of available learning resources available.

In their final project students get the possibility to excel in their own area of interest. You will be able to research, produce and present a project in your chosen media which can act as a platform for both further study and employment. This will be developed through discussion with the course team, you will then be allocated a supervisor from within this team dependent on specialism alongside advice from industry guest editors and the wide range of services to students within the University.

Graduates go into print, broadcast and electronic media as reporters, producers and researchers. Support is given in seeking both work placements during study and employment thereafter to assist the process of a successful career in journalism.
