Course summary

Overview

This course is also available as an Extended Masters that helps International students adjust to studying in the UK.

English teachers are in high demand across the globe. Our MA TESOL is a great choice whether you are a practising professional keen to take your English teaching to a higher level or a graduate looking to begin an exciting career that opens a world of possibilities.

The course is directed towards professional practice. While relevant theories will be presented and discussed, they are there to support you and enable you to make informed decisions in your professional practice. We place great emphasis on what we do as teachers, assessors, teacher trainers, writers, managers or researchers. Whatever your path in TESOL, this course will help you progress.

A strength of our course is its diversity and flexibility. This MA is open to both experienced teachers (the ‘Professional’ route) and to those who are interested in embarking on a career in TESOL (the ‘Fundamentals’ route).

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is a profession that could potentially take you around the globe. It can present opportunities for employment either as a member of a team of language teachers in an institution or it can offer the flexibility of being independent and freelance. An MA TESOL demonstrates knowledge and understanding of English language teaching, a familiarity with a range of relevant literature and an ability to research and to present informed discussions and ideas on related subjects.

Your future career

With an MA TESOL, your career prospects are enhanced, with paths into:

  • primary, secondary or tertiary school management abroad
  • senior, advisory, management and leadership positions, e.g. as Directors of Studies or Academic Directors in local and national English language schools
  • work with Departments of Ministries of Education, such as curriculum and syllabus design, materials writing and assessment
