Marine biology is a fascinating subject involving the study of life in the sea, and this course will help you to develop knowledge and skills for a range of exciting career opportunities. Our coastal location accesses a wide range of study habitats including exposed rocky shores, steep cliffs enclosing sandy sheltered bays, salt marshes and estuarine mudflats, and you will undertake boat work on our custom-designed 18m catamaran-class survey vessel equipped with state-of-the-art survey and research equipment.On campus, you will study in our new laboratories within a state-of-the-art £4.2m science lab facility, which also includes the unique £1.35m Visualisation Centre, which displays and manipulates multi-dimensional information from animal tag monitoring. Zoology at Swansea is ranked in the top in the UK for student satisfaction (National Student Survey 2019). We are 16th in the UK for graduate prospects (Complete University Guide 2018) and the subject gives you a wide range of specialist and generic transferable skills that can lead to career opportunities in fields such as marine research, environmental management, conservation, and teaching.You will study in a research-intensive environment - 7th in the UK for Research Excellence (Research Excellence Framework 2014) – and you will learn from academics at the cutting-edge of their fields. Our team includes Professor Rory Wilson, Rolex Laureate and Chief Scientific Consultant behind National Geographic’s Great Migrations, inventor of the Daily Diary tag to monitor animal movement and behaviour; and our experts also advised on the Blue Planet II TV series.We are 17th in the UK for teaching quality (Times & Sunday Times University Guide 2018). Swansea University is also ranked Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework, the highest ranking for teaching in universities. The BSc Marine Biology course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, and covers themes including animal and marine welfare and conservation, the biological control of invertebrate pests, microbiology, and ocean and climate. The course will give you the opportunity to explore a diverse and stimulating range of modules such as marine plankton and oceanography, marine ecosystems and marine and terrestrial ecology.At the end of Year 2, you will attend a residential field course, and in the final year, you will carry out an individual research project, based either in Swansea or on an overseas placement. In the last few years these have included locations such as Bermuda, Mexico, Indonesia, the USA and Australia. The Year in Industry provides extensive advantages, giving you the opportunity to apply your skills in a work based environment which in turn will greatly enhancing your employability. It must be taken with a relevant employer or organisation and can be taken either locally, nationally or overseas. The department will provide support and guidance prior to your placement in year 2 through the pre-placement programme, and whilst you are on placement through regular contact points with staff. The department is working with a number of organisations who are providing a range of placement opportunities. However securing a placement is the responsibility of the student. If you are unable to secure a placement by the end of the second year of your studies you will transfer onto the equivalent 3 year degree programme.“One of the most rewarding experiences for me was the SCUBA diving club.
