Course summary

Employability is at the very heart of this programme. From day one, you’ll be working on live client briefs under real-time pressures. You’ll experience a range of unique scenarios throughout your studies at BNU Business School to apply the theory you learn in practice and build your skills and understanding for successful career. **Why study at Buckinghamshire New University?**You’ll cover everything from basics of design and creativity, to how agencies, clients and media owners operate in this landscape, to the role of technology in the marketing communications process. We'll start preparing you for your career from day one and explore different roles in the industry. You'll be able to put your skills into practice with live industry briefs for brands such as O2, VW and Selfridges. You'll also benefit from our close proximity to London and our links with big businesses in the City.**What will I study?**In your first year, you’ll develop a toolkit of skills, from how to create media content to understanding consumers and the role of marketing communications on a global level. We’ll also address your perceptions of the industry to help you understand and explain different industry career routes. As you move into your second year, your modules will continue to combine theory and practice. Working with the Media School, you’ll learn how to turn a storyboard into a video. And, with support from the digital teaching team, you’ll explore digital technology and how it impacts marketing. This will be supported by practical exercises on understanding how to plan and deploy modern marketing communications plans and assessing how they've worked using industry standard research tools.**How will I be taught and assessed?**This course is offered as a four-year programme, including an initial Foundation Year. The Foundation Year will allow you to develop your academic study skills and build confidence in your abilities, identifying your own strengths and development needs for progression onto an undergraduate degree.Academics who teach on the programme have a wide range of experience and ongoing links with industry. Many of our staff are guest lecturers, conference speakers and content contributors so you’ll be learning from real leaders in their fields. We also welcome a wealth of guest speakers; top professionals from across industry come to BNU to help you understand how your degree applies to working in business, and how you can learn from their experiences. In your final year, your lecturers will shift from teacher to mentor. They’ll encourage you to debate current topics – and we expect you to behave in a way that sees you develop into a potential young executive in waiting. We introduce key business speakers and live briefs as assessments throughout the course. You'll also be expected to complete essays/reports as well give presentations, in order to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding.Your dissertation/consultancy project, completed in your final year, represents a major piece of independent research focused on strategic business issues of your choice.**What are my career prospects?**By the end of the course, you’ll be prepared for a variety of roles, from communications planning, to client liaison, creative development, digital buying and marketing and media consultancy.Recent graduates are working with the WPP, Omnicom, Publicis and Interpublic Group agencies, for Sky and EY consultancy, whilst others have gone on to form their own agencies and client companies. And this degree could take you anywhere. We have alumni in China, USA, and Australia and across Europe. They keep in touch with us too – and we think this really shows they know their success story started at BNU.
