Course summary

The MPH is internationally respected for its multidisciplinary focus and commitment to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) “Health for All” principles. It is an essential programme if you are working in any area of public health: governmental organisations, health services management, policy and planning, housing, transport, or for community groups and NGOs.

Public health aims to tackle the wider determinants of health. As a multidisciplinary subject, our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, health services, health service management, environmental health and graduates with a background in the natural sciences, social sciences or humanities subjects.

With its modular format, the programme can be studied to postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma or master’s levels within the University. Our online students study part-time over two to six years and integrate the programme with their jobs and CPD.

Why study this subject?

On completion of the programme, the student should have a foundation in the science and art of public health, including an in-depth knowledge of the concepts of health and disease and factors, which may affect these.

The resulting knowledge, skills, and insight should enable students to integrate and apply public health principles and theories through collaboration with stakeholders in a variety of settings.

Teaching methods and style

This programme is designed to be studied wholly online and part-time. Teaching is delivered through our state-of-the-art Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), which provides students with access to all resources required for interactive study online. On this platform you will be encouraged to work collaboratively with classmates and actively read around your topic through our comprehensive library of ebooks and journals.

Methods of assessment

A variety of methods are used to assess the module and programme outcomes:

  • Reflective professional learning log
  • Task-focused group work
  • Short report writing
  • Collaborative wiki design/writing
  • Project-based group work
  • Short answer tests
  • Online exams
  • Online synchronous and asynchronous discussions
  • Extended essays
  • Individual research project in the form of a dissertation

Career destinations

The MPH provides a strong basis for public health careers and provides a solid foundation for those working in health promotion, policy development and evaluation; in government or non-governmental organisations (NGO) and other health-related agencies; and those involved in public health research and practice in a variety of International settings.

It is intended that the programme will enhance existing knowledge and understanding of the subject matter that is relevant to public health, and augment this with understanding and skills relevant to public health in their sector. The expectation is that this will provide a basis for their career development towards senior and managerial positions in the profession.
