Course summary

The Mathematics and Physics Foundation Year course has been specifically designed to allow you to enhance your knowledge and understanding of core mathematics and physics principles, whilst enabling you to progress to your selected BSc or integrated masters degree course upon successful completion.

Taught by a specialist team of academics, this course consists of six modules that cover core aspects of mathematics and physics. You will also develop key employability skills that will prove invaluable when you enter the workplace.

Delivered in industry-leading facilities by our highly experienced team, you will be supported at every step of your course to ensure an enjoyable experience that will enhance your learning and future employment prospects.

Successful completion of this course will provide you with the knowledge required for your subsequent undergraduate degree in Mathematics BSc (Hons), Mathematics MMath (Hons), Physics BSc (Hons), Physics MPhys (Hons), Physics with Astrophysics BSc (Hons) or Physics with Astrophysics MPhys (Hons) at Northumbria.

This course consists of six modules that cover core aspects of mathematics and physics, including algebra and linear algebra, calculus, statistics, statics and dynamics, electricity, waves and particles, materials, computer skills and problem solving.

Teaching is delivered through a mixture of live lectures, seminars and applied practical laboratory work.

You will be assessed by various methods including assignments, examinations, scientific reports, presentations and group work that will be completed throughout both semesters.

This course will allow you to develop a wide range of skills that will prove invaluable when you progress to your chosen degree course or the workplace.

In addition to the research and practical skills you will learn, you will also leave with enhanced data analysis, computer modelling and communication skills.

Employability and research experience is enhanced during the laboratory sessions, class assessments and exams, and you will be encouraged to apply the knowledge and skills learnt from lectures, seminars, laboratories and independent learning to solve problem-based questions.

Throughout the duration of your course you will be working alongside students from a diverse range of backgrounds, thus developing your communication skills.
