Course summary
**Course overview**- Prepare yourself for more advanced or professional careers with an extra year’s study to deepen your understanding of pure and applied mathematics, leading to a higher-level MMath (Hons) qualification.- For the first three years you will follow our BSc (Hons) Mathematics programme, which covers a range of mathematical topics (including specialist areas such as cryptology, mathematical biology, and logic). You’ll have the chance to shape the course to your own interests and career aspirations; we ensure that what you learn is interesting, innovative and relevant.- At the end of your third year you have the option of progressing onto our MMath (Hons) degree, which involves an extra year of advanced study. As well as studying more advanced mathematical topics (such as graph theory, topology, and chaos) you’ll learn to study in a more independent fashion and develop your transferable skills even further.- The MMath degree will enable you to apply for more specialised careers; it’s also the perfect stepping stone towards studying for a PhD and pursuing an academic career.**Why study with us**- Master of Mathematics is ranked 1st in the UK with 100% of students satisfied with their course (National Student Survey 2020)- All our mathematics lecturers have doctoral research degrees, and are experts in their fields, which range across pure mathematics and applied mathematics.- Master of Mathematics is ranked 3rd in England with 91% of students satisfied with the teaching quality (Times Good University Guide 2021)**Further information**- As well as accrediting the MMath Mathematics degree, the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) also holds regular public seminars at the University, enabling you to develop a broader knowledge of mathematics and get a better understanding of the applications of mathematics in a variety of specialised areas.- You’ll have the opportunity to undertake an optional 48-week placement in industry in-between your second and third years, enabling you to gain vital work experience.- At the end of your third year you have the option of either graduating with a BSc Mathematics degree or progressing onto our MMath (Hons) degree, which involves an extra year of advanced study.- Each summer there are opportunities to take part in the University’s funded undergraduate internship scheme. This involves being paid to spend the summer working closely with a member of staff on a research project. By taking on this opportunity you’ll experience what it’s like to undertake cutting-edge research as you develop a variety of skills which will be highly valued by future employers. At the end of the internship you’ll present your work through a poster session.- We also offer a third-year teaching placement module (Undergraduate Ambassador Scheme – UAS) providing you with the opportunity to get a taste of teaching and gain vital experience which will prove invaluable for teacher training applications. There are many other opportunities to work with schools and younger students and develop key teaching skills.
