Course summary
**If you have a passion for mathematical methods and enjoy the satisfaction of problem-solving, this course is for you.**Mathematics plays a significant role in the modern world, from enabling technological and scientific innovation to predicting shopping habits. It underpins key areas in the sciences including data analysis, computer science and statistics and opens up a range of careers and areas for further study. At Kent, you’re more than your grades and, whatever your age or educational background, our foundation years can help you to gain the skills you need to study at university. **Why study Mathematics at Kent:*** You’ll be taught by internationally-renowned mathematicians and statisticians whose varied interests lead to a broad range of optional modules * As a foundation-year student, you are a full member of the University and can take part in all student activities * You will have access to industry-standard software like Maple, MATLAB, R and Python * You’ll study in award-winning classrooms and breakout spaces * The BSc degree is accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications * In your first year, to help ensure the move from A level to degree-level study goes smoothly, you attend small group tutorials where you work closely with other students, practising the new mathematics you are learning. **Course details**In your foundation year you develop your mathematics skills and start learning some university-level material, fully preparing you for progression onto stage 1 of your course. In your first year, you study a mixture of pure and applied mathematics, and statistics. You build on this foundation in your second year, when it’s also possible to take optional modules, as you begin to discover the areas of the subject that most interest you. In your final year, you can tailor your degree by selecting modules that match your future ambitions. There are a wide range of options in areas such as computational statistics, mathematics in the financial world, games and strategy, and data collection as well as polynomials, graphs and combinatorics and stochastic processes.
