Course summary

The MMath in Mathematics with Professional Placement degree course has an essential core of pure mathematics linked with a range of modules from applied mathematics, statistics, computing, finance and operational research. You will have the opportunity to sample many of these branches of mathematics in your first year. The course is flexible, allowing you to specialise as you progress or to continue studying a broad range of modules from the major branches of mathematics.Designed for those with an enquiring mind, this degree provides a range of mathematics modules designed to challenge and stimulate your academic curiosity. It is an ideal preparation for a career in research, business, government or a wide range of industries. You may simply want to gain a deeper understanding of mathematics and develop skills in demand by a range of prospective employers. We support you to become an independent learner, able to effectively tackle unseen problems. This particular version of the degree allows you to spend your third year in paid work as a mathematician at an organisation in the United Kingdom or Europe. Placements can be undertaken with a wide range of providers across industry and government including many in the professional and financial services, the pharmaceutical industry and organisations such as the Office for National Statistics. You will have support from the School to apply, however the responsibility for securing a placement rests with the student and a placement cannot be guaranteed. You are free to transfer to the MMath Mathematics degree scheme if you decide not to take the Placement year or cannot secure a placement. Much of Year One is common to all of our degree schemes so a transfer to another Maths degree such as BSc Mathematics is usually possible.
