Course summary

Perhaps you've always been a keen mathematician? Are you interested in using your maths skills to expand knowledge in areas as diverse as space travel, software development and complex medicine?Studying mathematics at Cardiff you’ll develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in the main areas of mathematics. This four-year course provides a broad background in applied mathematics, statistics, computing and operational research. You’ll explore abstract mathematical concepts, logical argument and deductive reasoning, and study the different ways mathematics can be applied to develop problem-solving skills. As you move through the course, you will gain academic independence, moving from small group teaching in your first year through to an optional independent project in your final year. This version of the degree allows you to spend your third year studying abroad before returning to Cardiff for two more years. The School of Mathematics has agreements with institutions across Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia, and you will have support to apply for your overseas year. Studying abroad is a great way to broaden your academic knowledge, immerse yourself in another culture and gain skills that could be valued by employers. Not only can it enhance your CV by demonstrating key skills such as communication, flexibility and collaborative working, it can also provide you with valuable networking opportunities. Above all, it is the start of a new adventure. A chance to experience other cultures and viewpoints, make new friends and share unforgettable experiences. Our degree schemes are flexible, so you're free to switch between our mathematics degrees at the end of year one if you decide not to take the year abroad or your interests change.
