Course summary

Mathematics is one of the most timeless and international disciplines in existence. Both ancient and modern, it forms the foundations upon which the modern world is built. Contemporary science and business are underpinned by mathematics, and our degrees reflect this connection with industry.

This flagship four-year MMath degree is designed for exceptionally talented students, covering a broad base of advanced classical and modern mathematics. It includes pure and applied mathematics, and mathematics for finance. Studying maths at Swansea University gives you access to world-leading teaching and cutting edge facilities. As you progress, your developing mathematical abilities will combine with transferable skills which are vital to securing employment in the wider industry. The MMath will distinguish you as a talented, ambitious and committed mathematician.

A flexibly structured degree path means you have the opportunity to study abroad for a year or work in industry for a year, either locally, nationally or overseas. As part of this degree scheme, you will be able to study at one of our huge range of partner universities in your third year. Studying abroad is a great opportunity to experience another culture, make friends from around the world and gain valuable experience to prepare you for the world of work after you complete your studies.

Places and availability change annually so specific destinations can’t be guaranteed, but previously Mathematics students have completed their year abroad in Australia, Canada, Singapore, France, Germany, Spain, The Netherlands and the USA.

This can give you the chance to apply your skills in a professional environment, or in an overseas environment, which may help to boost your employment prospects after university. The MMath gives you the chance to explore the number theory that Pythagoras studied, the financial mathematics that the stock market relies on, and subjects from probability analysis and nonlinear partial differential equations, to noncommutative geometry and algebraic topology. You will learn to use logical reasoning and construct rigorous arguments alongside oral and written communication skills.

We will train you for a range of careers, provide a foundation for postgraduate study and research. Our MMath Mathematics programme is accredited to meet the educational requirements of the Chartered Mathematician designation awarded by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. Our mathematics graduates are set on course for a range of stimulating opportunities.
