Maths

The department of mathematics has research strength in several areas. The largest research group is in topology and geometry.

There is a strong group in representation theory, and other groups in algebraic geometry with applications to mathematical physics and in tropical geometry.

Algebraic Geometry / Mathematical Physics

• Our research in algebra is centred on group theory and related topics which include Gramian theory, Martin theory, Turner theory, fusion systems, Hopf algebras, algebraic groups, geometric invariant theory and applications of algebra to music. We have close links to Geometry/Topology and Algebraic Geometry/ Mathematical Physics.

Geometry / Topology

• We research mathematical physics ranges between discreet statistical mechanics and mathematical models for quantum field theories. We use Algebraic Geometry and Topology, Representation theory and Graph Theory

Tropical Geometry

• We research tropical mathematics, semiring theory, communicative algebra, matrix algebra, semigroup representations and polyhedral algebraic geometry.

Students with PhD degrees in Mathematics are recruited by universities, research institutes, and a range of industrial and commercial organisations.
