Course overview

Mechanical Engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines which integrates with today's multi-disciplinary working environments. This course provides applicants with theoretical and practical skills which will enable them to translate science into real-world safer, better performing and higher value solutions, with an applied focus on computer-aided engineering, design and sustainability.

Upon completion there are a wide range of career opportunities open to you in fields that may involve design, manufacture, marketing, research, development, and management.

Teaching methods

You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and specialist laboratory work delivered at the University's in purpose-built facilities in Thornton Science Park. The topics you will study are industrially relevant, and based around laboratories and research projects.


Assessment will be through examination and coursework. This will include lab work assignments, presentations, reports, essays and projects.

Job prospects

Mechanical Engineering can contribute to almost all engineering industry, developing products and services from consumer goods through to national infrastructure such as power generation, rail and shipping. The problem solving skills and ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams on top of the sound science and engineering knowledge base allow mechanical engineers to work around the world delivering projects with real world benefits.
