This accredited integrated master’s is your fastest route to becoming a Chartered Engineer. You will develop the scientific, mathematical and technical skills to design advanced machines such as driverless cars. You’ll develop advanced in-demand skills through industrial design projects, an additional year of study and optional placement year.This course is suitable for individuals who relish problem-solving and have a strong desire to design and optimise advanced machines (be they driverless cars, high-speed trains, robotic manufacturing systems, tidal power stations or solar-powered generators) through the novel application of science and mathematics.This MEng Mechanical Engineering undergraduate programme encourages critical thinking and foster curiosity through both teamwork and independent study. The design exercises provide the opportunity for students to be engaged in cross-disciplinary challenges, preparing the way for tackling larger problems that span traditional engineering boundaries. The courses are led by academic staff from our active Research Centres, supported by specialist professionals from industry. This degree encompasses the disciplines of material sciences, thermodynamics, solid and fluid mechanics and robotics. Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, it is your quickest way to achieve Chartered Engineer status.You’ll develop the skills and expertise to design and build advanced machines, such as:- driverless cars- high-speed trains- robotic manufacturing systems- tidal power stations- solar-powered generators.A fourth year at master’s level prepares you for professional practice through an in-depth individual design project and a focus on business and management.- Apply your interest in science and mathematics to solve engineering challenges and develop innovative solutions- Learn from academic staff from our active Research Centres, supported by specialist professionals from industry- Study in specialist facilities including our flight deck, motion simulators, wind tunnels, optical compressors, formula car simulator and more- Boost your employability with a work placement – past hosts have included TfL, Nissan, Interserve, AECOM and Network Rail- Benefit from our industry connections and outstanding reputation from 120 years of engineering teaching.Students are strongly encouraged to undertake a 12 month placement at the end of year three. Students are paid while on placement and are visited by their personal tutor during this time. Following placement, students more fully appreciate the context and relevance of their university studies and gain a greater understanding of the industry they are about to join. Placements are a fantastic way to gain professional experience in a relevant field as part of your degree. Undertaking a placement year could also count towards the experience requirement for a professional engineering qualification. In recent years Mechanical Engineering students have been able to obtain placements at leading companies within their chosen field such as TfL, Nissan, Gamma, G2 Energy, Interserve, AECOM and Network Rail.Mechanical Engineering graduates work in industries such as transport, power generation, manufacturing, automotive and energy. Our recent graduates have obtained posts within Ford, Howden, Delphi Diesel Systems, AVL, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar Land Rover, Tube Lines and Holroyd.
