Course summary

**From heating systems to the vehicles we drive, mechanical engineering shapes our daily life. With increasing demand for professional qualified engineers, a Mechanical Engineering degree with Salford can launch an exciting career designing, commissioning and maintaining the systems of the future.**Mechanical engineers manage a wide range of processes, from the production of silicone chips to creating jet aircrafts. Following the foundation year you’ll follow a three-year degree programme – or four, with our MEng (Hons) integrated master’s pathway. Learning takes place in our Peel Park campus, minutes from central Manchester. Here, you’ll develop practical problem-solving skills in our specialist mechanical, aerodynamics, composite material and control and dynamic laboratories. You’ll study engineering in relation to mathematics, electrical systems, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, engineering structures and dynamics. You’ll explore elements such as engineering dynamics and control engineering, and take part in a mechanical group design project. The Foundation Year aims to provide understanding of the key subjects in computer science to meet the prerequisites for study on the associated degree programme. The key areas of study will be effective communication and study skills combined with key subjects in engineering. Following completion of the Foundation Year, you will progress on to year one of BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree for the remaining three years of your course (or four with a placement year). With a strong management theme throughout the course, you’ll have opportunities to interact with a broad range of local business and industry multinationals. You can also choose to take an industrial placement year, develop your workplace skills and add ‘with professional experience’ to your degree award. Our Mechanical Engineering courses scored 90% for overall satisfaction, and 94% for learning resources in the National Student Survey 2020 (University of Salford analysis of unpublished NSS 2020 data)**Features**• Learn about the relationship between micro-structure and mechanical properties of materials, mechanisms of corrosion and corrosion protection• Explore specialist modules such as dynamics and control engineering, structural mechanics and Finite Element analysis• Write concise specifications, present concepts, perform appropriate calculations and select appropriate manufacturing processes• Gain an understanding of the concepts of engineering thermodynamics and fluid mechanics• Understand project timings, resource allocation and decision-making methodology used by industry
