Course summary

Overview

Investigate all aspects of media theory and practice, from broadcast media to cyberspace. Develop your practical skills and your knowledge to become an all-round professional in today’s fast-moving media.

Our BA (Hons) Media Studies degree combines creative practice and critical thinking. You will engage with a wide range of ideas central to understanding our 21st century media environment.

Central to your studies will be critical approaches to media, technology, culture, and identity. You’ll explore current issues around our data driven society through modules in digital media theory and law, culture and technology.

Television studies will also feature prominently, as well as modules that theorise popular culture and examine music, society and culture. You’ll learn to analyse and debate the latest theories and discover the impact of media on all our lives. In particular, our Online Journalism module will allow you to combine both the practical and theoretical frameworks to understand the ethical responsibility of journalism in a 'post-truth' age.

Assessment

You’ll show your progress through many different methods that reflect the range of skills required by employers. Your assignments might include case studies, critical essays, screenplays, journals, film reviews and analyses, presentations, and a portfolio of practical work, as well as ‘hands on’ assignments such as internet, print and video production / commissions.

Careers

Our BA (Hons) Media Studies will help you prepare for many media-related roles, including broadcasting, film, video or television production, media consultancy, journalism, public relations and advertising. You’ll also pick up skills for other professions that require an understanding of the media, including web design and publishing.
