On this Chelmsford-based degree you’ll apply engineering principles to the design of innovative medical devices that meet patients’ needs. You’ll develop practical skills in our specialist labs and be taught by lecturers with research backgrounds in joint replacement technology. The option of a placement year will give you real-life experience and prepare you for a varied and rewarding career.If you have a passion for engineering and making a difference to peoples’ lives then our Medical Engineering course is for you. Medical Engineering is a vast subject, with the opportunities to develop new technologies for medical operations, prosthetic limbs, and even monitoring machinery.In our newly designed course you will develop your engineering knowledge and and problem solving skills to progress into a career in the ever growing medical sector. You’ll learn to apply engineering principles to the design, development and improvement of medical devices, like implants, or even the treatment methods with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes from medical procedures.Our course offers a project based learning approach, meaning you will gain hands-on experience alongside your classes, helping you to apply your knowledge throughout your course. You’ll develop theoretical and practical knowledge from a range of engineering, computational simulations, in vitro experiments, medical devices/medical science disciplines. As well as key engineering theories, you’ll explore human health, and discover treatment simulation techniques used to predict performances of implants, surgical techniques and medical devices such as joint contact mechanics.Our strong links with hospitals will give you the opportunity to witness surgical operations and work with surgeons to address clinical problems for your final-year projects, not to mention that you are on the same campus as our brand new School of Medicine, the only one in Essex.As well as developing crucial problem-solving and critical thinking skills, you’ll gain unique practical laboratory and computer simulation skills, in addition to research experience. Most importantly, you’ll develop an awareness of the professional attitudes and attributes required for embarking on a multidisciplinary, varied and exciting career in healthcare and medical engineering..ARU is the first in the UK, and one of the few in Europe, to offer sophisticated and robust computer simulation and laboratory testing facilities, the kinds that are used by large engineering and medical companies. This means you will have the chance to build your CV as well as your knowledge throughout the course, ready for work at the end of your studies.You’ll be taught by a dedicated team of research-active professionals who work with medical companies through Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and also benefit first hand from their innovative research. You also have the opportunity to use our Medical Engineering Research Group's facilities, including:our start-of-the-art movement analysis laboratorybiomechanics testing equipmentcomputational facilities to simulate virtual surgerysix-degree-of-freedom joint simulation machinethree-dimensional (3D) printing.
