Course summary

Overview

Led by Professor Beverly Snaith and Professor Maryann Hardy, both of who have national and international profiles related to advanced practice and radiographer reporting, the Medical Image Reporting programme has been revised, updated and expanded to align with expectations of the Health Education England Advanced Clinical Practice Framework.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Image Reporting embraces an interactive approach to developing high-level image interpretation and reporting skills alongside the person, communication and decision-making skills necessary as a Reporting Radiographer. Choose from either Musculoskeletal or Chest and Abdomen reporting of conventional radiographs.

Learning and assessment

The new programme commences with the Principles of Reporting module starting in September which introduces students to the fundamentals of image evaluation, clinical decision-making, accountability and responsibility.

The module challenges students to examine the impact of radiographic practice, technique and technology on the diagnostic quality of images as well as exploring the impact of terminology and phrasing on effective communication. Attendance is two block weeks: one in September and one in October. The assessment is a presentation and assignment.

Students then have the option to select either the Medical Image Reporting (Musculoskeletal) module or Medical Image Reporting (Chest & Abdomen) module, depending on their chosen scope of reporting practice. These modules use a range of image bank assessments, lectures, tutorials, group tasks and clinical practice activities to develop student knowledge and confidence in the reporting of images across a range of traumatic and pathological conditions.

The combination of theoretical and work-based learning maximises knowledge and skills that can be applied to practice. Attendance is three block weeks: Nov, Jan, March for MSK; Jan, March, April for Chest and Abdomen. The assessments include a portfolio, clinical audit of reporting practice, and examination.
