Course summary

For students who have successfully completed their MBBS degree, or are scheduled to do so before beginning the MD(Res), this programme provides the opportunity to delve into a focused area of research and join a team of world-leading scientists and engineers. Careers

Our students have a diverse range of options upon graduation. Many choose to continue in academia through the subsequent award of a PhD studentship or a postdoctoral research post. Others progress to roles in industry, applying their newly-acquired skills to science and engineering projects within multi-national medical device companies, or alternatively, within small-scale start-up enterprises. A substantial number also enter the NHS or private healthcare sector to work as clinical scientists or engineers upon completion of further clinical training.

Employability

Postgraduate study within the department offers the chance to develop important skills and acquire new knowledge through involvement with a team of world-leading scientists and engineers. As well as developing key science and engineering knowledge, graduates learn project management, communication and team working skills which they are then able to apply to solving problems at the forefront of human endeavour. The department has a recognised track record for producing excellent graduates who go on to hold leading roles in universities, companies and hospitals around the world.
