Course summary

The programme is designed to enable intercalating medical students and graduates to initiate a research career in key areas of medicine and bioscience in academia, health-care settings, or industry. It aims to provide high-quality training for real-life medical/biomedical research through a high-quality real-life experience.

The MRes in Medical Sciences course promotes challenge-led disciplinary and interdisciplinary research susceptible to implementation within modern medical sciences, healthcare systems (including the NHS), the biotechnology industry, and regulatory bodies.

The day-to-day assessment and support by the research supervisor and research team as well as a variety of specific interactive tutorials delivered within the course target the mastering of skills to produce high-quality pieces of assessment. These sessions include class and small group discussions and debates; data interpretation; technical troubleshooting tests; critical appraisal of published works etc. Those expected assessment pieces are not purely tools to evaluate the student but correspond in fact to the same skills and outputs that a professional researcher in medical/biomedical sciences needs to have and produce as vehicles of the professional academic discourse in real life.

Opportunities

Graduates of the programme will be ideally suited to pursue the academic medicine path, PhD studies or a career in medical/bioscience research.

There may be opportunities for external research experience in other universities nationally or internationally, as well as in industry, clinical settings and other healthcare facilities as a function of the projects selected and undertaken. It is pertinent to mention the links between our School and several national and international collaborating partners in the environment of human health.
