OVERVIEW


Providing outstanding care for people with a range of mental health conditions is a challenging but greatly rewarding career. Accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), our Nursing (Mental Health) degree course will give you the blend of essential skills, knowledge and experience to help meet high demand for workers in this field.

Led by expert clinical practitioners, you will gain a deep understanding of areas including human development and managing medicine safely, as well as the technical and personal skills required for delivering high-quality compassionate care for patients in a wide range of environments. On completion of our mental health nursing course, you will be able to apply for Registered Nurse (Mental Health) status with the NMC.To support your mental health nurse training, you will gain vital experience on industry placements in a range of settings, thanks to our excellent links with the healthcare sector. You will also be able to develop your hands-on practical skills during your studies through use of our state-of-the-art simulation facilities on campus, including a simulated clinical environment and virtual reality technology.

FACILITIES

As a student on our mental health nursing course at University College Birmingham, you will have access to our Health Skills and Simulation Suite, featuring a purpose-built simulated clinical environment to help you practise your physical health skills and enhance your practical training.Our 360° immersive video room provides access to 200 interactive health and social care backgrounds, while we also have virtual reality software and a range of mental health-focused online case studies and scenarios, helping you grow in confidence in your mental health nursing practice.


PLACEMENTS

Our course features multiple placements in different environments throughout your studies, ranging in duration from four weeks to 14 weeks.Participating in care delivered over 24 hours a day and 7 days per week is an integral part of the course, so you will be expected to adopt various shift patterns. Some placements may also be some distance from your home to enable you to experience different settings.Employers we have worked with include Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust, Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Trust, Cygnet Healthcare, Practice Plus Group – Health in Justice, Birmingham City Council and Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council.
