**September and January intakes.****Course overview**: The midwifery degree at Teesside University provides you with the knowledge and skills to develop an exciting and rewarding career. Midwives work in partnership with women and their families and provide support, advice and care to enable them to make informed choices during pregnancy, birth and early parenthood. The midwife’s role encompasses health promotion and health education to enhance the health of women and their families within a multicultural society. Midwifery requires competent, accountable and problem-solving practitioners, with good communication skills. The midwife works within a multidisciplinary, multi agency team to promote health and wellbeing and a better birth experience. As with all healthcare professionals the public place a high level of expectation and trust in their midwife and therefore to work in this sector it is essential that you are able to demonstrate the core values embedded within the NHS Constitution. These are as follows: working together for patients, respect and dignity, commitment to quality of care, compassion, improving lives and everyone counts. This course prepares you to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council's standards for pre-registration midwifery education (NMC, 2009).This course is 135 weeks of full-time study consisting of 50% theory and 50% practice, plus 21-week’s annual leave over three full calendar years. The structure of University theory and practice placement weeks means that it is not possible to take holidays outside of the set dates. Study time is divided between contact study and non-contact study. Non-contact study allows for engagement with the subject area through a range of directed and non-directed learning activities. A range of clinical placements, within community and NHS hospital placements settings, support learning and development.**After the course**: The knowledge and experience gained during the course provides you with the opportunity to have an exciting and rewarding career.
