Course summary

Overview

Become a qualified midwife with us

A shortage of qualified midwives means now's the perfect time to switch to this rewarding healthcare field. This course has been especially designed for registered adult nurses and has been developed in partnership with local NHS trusts. Studying midwifery at university will give you an equal mix of theory and practice, preparing you for a new career in just 85 weeks.

You'll spend half your time with us learning theory to meet Nursing and Midwifery Council standards of proficiency. This will cover anatomy, physiology/pathophysiology, cultural and psychosocial issues, interprofessional working, legal and ethical issues.

The other half will focus on clinical practice. You’ll be required to work shifts, experiencing 24-hour, seven-day care to develop your understanding of the needs and experiences of women and babies. You’ll have your own patients and get support from a mentor. To promote efficiency and continuity, you’ll follow a reduced caseload.

Accreditation

Our degree is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

How is the BSc Midwifery with Professional Registration (Shortened Programme for Registered Adult Nurses) taught?

The course is split equally between theory and practice, with clinical experience and practical simulations forming an important part of your learning - the emphasis is on observing what to do, doing it yourself and then improving through feedback. You will have your own patients and will be supported by a mentor. You will also gain some experience in other areas of healthcare.

You will also attend lectures, seminars, workshops and group and individual tutorials, and learn through problem-solving and role-play exercises, visits, critical reviews of research studies, case study analyses, group work and online research. You will keep a reflective diary of your progress.

Assessment

We’re planning to deliver our assessment in a similar way to previous years. We will review this regularly, and let you know in advance of your assessment if we need to make any changes.

You will be assessed through clinical examinations, written examinations, a viva voce exam, laboratory simulations and coursework including your dissertation, your portfolio, projects, reports, drug calculations, presentations and online learning. You will also be assessed on your clinical placements.

Careers
