Overview

If you have a passion for motorsports then our Motorsports Engineering degree is for you. You will learn engineering principles specific to motorsport.

You will study:

  • mathematics
  • engineering design and management
  • dynamics
  • thermo-fluids
  • stress analysis.

Our automative lab has specialist equipment including a four-post rig, damper dyno and high speed instrumented engine test cells.

We work with the local autosports industry to shape the content of the course. This means you will have the skills to contribute to this exciting industry. Companies that offer work placements and employment opportunities include:

  • Mercedes GP
  • Williams
  • McLaren
  • Force India
  • Red Bull Racing
  • AP Racing.

Our graduates have gone on to work with Formula 1 companies as:

  • race engineers
  • designers
  • chassis or powertrain engineers.

Assessment

Assessment methods used on this course

All modules taken in your first year have an element of continuous assessment.

Modules taken in your second and final years are assessed largely on the basis of written examinations, although some modules rely solely on coursework.

As part of this course you will be given an opportunity to gain a Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS) accreditation by IMechE through a work placement with one of the University's industry partners.

Career prospects

The United Kingdom is the home of the motorsport industry and it employs many graduates each year. Several generations of our students are in F1 companies as race engineers, designers, aerodynamicists, chassis and powertrain engineers.

There are also postgraduate learning opportunities open through the department at MSc or PhD level.
