Course summary

Research study courses in Electronic Engineering are run by the School of Computer Science and Engineering, which is situated in Central London. The School hosts one research centre and nine groups actively pursuing cutting edge research at the fundamental and applied levels. The research interests include but are not limited to: power efficient electronic components circuits and systems including VLSI solutions; advanced, efficient algorithms for signal, image and video processing; communication systems – addressing all layers of the standard OSI model. While parts of this research focus on some fundamental questions, most of the work is motivated by specific applications and industrial needs. These include: medical diagnosis systems, such as non-invasive methods for human health monitoring and diagnosis and automated malaria diagnosis; cyber security enabled drone flight infrastructure and positioning systems; real-time processing applications for the media and creative industries, environmental monitoring; autonomous vehicles and transport applications; cognitive radio; development of efficient components and circuits for 5G and future generation communication systems.

A large proportion of Electronic Engineering work is interdisciplinary and involves other Engineering disciplines, Computer Science, Life Sciences, Psychology, Business and Educational Research. The School has in its disposal several research laboratories with excellent facilities that support our own research programmes and those taken by doctoral students. Our doctoral students have comfortable individual working spaces in close vicinity of the academic offices and laboratories.

The standard route for research study in the School is PhD via MPhil. Candidates with good previous research experience can apply for PhD Direct. Those with substantial record of research publications may be eligible to enrol for PhD by Published Work. Overseas students can consider taking doctoral study by Distance Learning, allowing them to pursue their degree with us from their country of residence.
