Course summary

This 12 month programme features no taught content, rather you will undertake a research project and write a thesis from your results. Similar to a PhD, you will have a supervisor who is based in your chosen field. MSc by Research will develop your academic and practical skills and is an excellent option should you wish to explore your area of interest further but feel that a PhD is not the right choice at this time. MSc by Research students often go on to PhD study or to work in industry.Contraction of cardiac and skeletal muscle depends on the precise arrangement and interaction of elements of the excitation-contraction machinery and of the signalling pathways that regulate these. Our research employs a range of imaging and biochemical approaches to study the molecular machinery of striated muscle contraction, with a particular focus on proteins that control intracellular calcium. Ultimately we use multi-scale computational modelling to link super-resolution imaging data with whole-cell and whole-organ function, to dissect the contribution of protein expression and spatial arrangement to the control of normal and abnormal cardiac function.
